5 Things I've Learned About Being a Londoner

Having lived in London for about 5 months now, there are few things I have come to notice about living here.

Firstly > You must have an oyster card, or people will tut and push you for getting in the way or taking up their commute time by stopping to buy a ticket. Also said oyster card will be draining your monthly funds almost as much as food.
However, staff working in the train stations will almost always be helpful if asked for advice on how to get somewhere.

Secondly > There is most likely a pigeon within 5 ft of you. They will fly unpredictably and very near your head. For some reason I seem to be the only person who will see sudden flapping out of the corner of my eye, or hear a quick burst of fluttering wings and suddenly duck or swat the air as if I'm suffering from some pathetic form of pigeon attack PTSD. (Not to to be taken too lightly, it was meant in good humour and not as an attempt to belittle actual sufferers.)

Thirdly > If you are in the position of looking for somewhere to live still, and aren't fortunate enough to afford your own place, my best advice is to go to one the spareroom hosted speed-flatmating events. This was my personal saviour, after months of of searching and not really finding what I was looking for or getting much response, I was able to go to a bar where about 80 other people were either looking or had rooms available. It sounds terrifying to some, but once you get there its actually not too bad, and if it weren't for that event I may not be living in the wonderful house I am now. So bite the bullet folks and just dive in.

Fourthly > There is no phone service on the underground! SHOCKING.... to some, and perhaps thought of as the end of the world. I like to look at it as a quick break from technology. The secret is to carry things in preparation for this hiatus, such as a book or an iPod so once can immerse themselves in other peoples creations and to go back to having a regular hand as opposed to a phone shaped one. If you are caught without your preparation objects I suggest, reading over someone's shoulder, or try daydreaming! I tell you it has become far too underrated, there's nothing like spending a good 15-30 mins with your own imagination.

Fifthly > Have a good pair of shoes. Treat yourself to a pair of shoes that doesn't come from primark or have a 6 inch heel, because one thing that they don't tell you about London is that it darn near kills your feet. This isn't something I've really heard people mention, but it can't just be me suffering. My feet have been very pissed off at me since I got here, namely because it took me a while to spring for a decent pair of shoes for my tootsies. You'll thank me later folks!

Todays little music awakening is a band called 'The Noisettes' - they are my recent love. Apparently it means hazelnut in french. They are a british indie rock band, composed of a female lead singer a bass and guitar player. They've been around since about 2003  I hear. Here is my favourite song called 'Ragtop Car' which was released in 2012 in their album Contact.

X is for Xylos Y is for You Won't

So my apologies for missing my post yesterday, I spent the day in bed attempting to write essays, but instead ending up skyping my sister in Singapore. Better than essays if you ask me!
So you want some bands for X and Y you say... Well here you go my splendiferous readers.

X is for XYLOS: a five piece pop group fro New York City. They have some great songs, that are upbeat, and playful, but that don't have awful lyrics. With great vocals, and electronic sounds, as well as your typical band instruments. They have an indie pop kind of sound. Their EP album 'Bedrooms' came out in 2008, with their latest self-titled album out in 2011. They also released a single this year called 'Summerlong'.
One of my favourites is called 'Not Enough'

so Y is for YOU WON'T: are an indie folk band made up of Massachusetts natives  Josh Arnoudse and Raky Sastri. Now based in New York City, they have quite quirky songs. They have been writing songs together since Most of their albums are self recorded, and their most recent one called 'Skeptic Goodbye' has been their only one done by a record label.
One of the songs I like is called 'Three Car Garage' - just to warn you the first 17 is a little kid screaming a bit in a home video, it made me jump the first time I heard it...

Sorry there hasn't been as much folk or blues bands, I know that was mostly my theme to start off with. Now it's sort of migrated to indie folk, but I have some good ones for Z so stay tuned for my last A-Z post.
Love and Peace.

W is for Walk off the Earth

WALK OFF THE EARTH: is a Canadian indie band. They have been around since 2006, and have some awesome songs. They have been gaining a following recently from doing popular covers and kooky videos. It was only this year that they signed with a record company. They have great guitar skills, and mainly do acoustic covers, in inventive ways. Their vocals have a good blend of male and female. Their first album came out in 2007 titled 'Smooth Like a Stone on a Beach', their second came out last year titled 'My Rock', they feature mostly covers of other bands. Their most recent hit was a video them covering the popular song by Gotye 'Somebody That I used to Know'
One of my favourites though is one they did a cover of 'Little Boxes' that is also above, and one final one because, Hey, lets got a little nuts today, is their most recent video release called 'Polly' which I believe is an original song.
W is also for THE WAVE PICTURES: are a 3 man English indie rock band. They have recorded a string of EP's and singles, and have a couple of albums. They have an amazing light, acoustic sound, with soft vocals and catchy melodies. Their lyrics are often quite whimsical as well. There are too many albums to list, and too many songs I like, but one of my favourite songs by them is called 'Sweetheart'
Love and Peace everyone, sorry for the many video's went a little balloons for this one....

Haha don't know why I chose balloons as my adjective. Must be fatigue.

U is for Urbantramper

URBANTRAMPER: is a 'future folk' band from New Zealand. The number of members seems to fluctuate, but they have released a few albums. Originally more of an acoustic sounds their latest tracks have developed more of an electronic sound. But all their albums have some good tracks. Their first album was in 2007 titled 'Tokon and The Colours', another in 2009 titled 'Rise and Toward' and their latest being in 2010 titled 'All That is Solid Melts into Air'.
One of my favourites is called 'How do you have your tea?' off of their first album

U is also for UZI & ARI: founded by Ben Shepard, the bands members have also changed a few times. Currently based in Salt Lake City, their sound is a slow building type of song, with a wonderful soft vocal; with a typical keyboard, drums, guitar type set up. Their first album titled 'Don't Leave in Such a Hurry' came out in 2004, and their most recent full album came out in 2008 titled 'Headworms', and they had some tracks released in 2010.
One I like is called 'Mountain/Molehill', but if you have spotify I suggest you check out their track Thumbsucker from their album 'Headworms' as well, its a bit more upbeat.

Hope you are enjoying your blog A-Z's. I really must get out to visit more before it finishes.
Love and Peace.

T is for The Two Man Gentlemen Band

THE TWO MAN GENTLEMEN BAND: is made up of banjo player Andy Bean and bassist Fuller Condon. They have a great, jazz, folk, americana type style, with witty lyrics. They have a fun party feeling to them, with light strumming, and drinks in hand type of attitude. Their shows have a reputation, of them dressing as characters and handing out kazoos to the audience. They have released 3 albums, the first is a self-titled one released in 2005, a good few in between and their latest coming out this year titled 'Two at a Time'.
One of my favourite songs is called 'I Like to Party With Girls'

T is also for TWO HOURS TRAFFIC: are a Canadian indie rock band, supposedly named after the prologue to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. In 2005 they released their self titled album, and some others along the way, their latest being released in 2009 titled 'Territory', with another album planned for this year I think. Their songs seem to be popular as background songs to drama teen shows such as gossip girl and one tree hill..
One of the my favourites is called 'Sure Can Start'

Love and Peace.

N is for The Narcoleptic Dancers

THE NARCOLEPTIC DANCERS: is a half-brother and sister duo from the Netherlands. They have a kooky indie pop type sound, with nice melodies. Their trademark look is that they drape their hair over their eyes, kind of a cousin it look. Their first EP came out in 2010 titled 'Not Evident' and their album 'Never Sleep' came out last year.
My favourite song is the first one I heard by them called 'Not Evident'

N is also for NOUS NON PLUS: they are a french indie-rock band, based in New York City. They have been around for a while but only released albums quite recently. Their songs are really upbeat, and happy to listen to. They always put me in a good mood. Their first self-titled album came out in 2005, their second titled 'Menagerie' was released in 2009, and their latest titled 'Freudian Slip' came out last year.
My favourite song is called 'Ye-Ye C'est L'ete- Summer song' but I couldn't find that one anywhere but on spotify for those of you in the UK. So Here is 'J'en Ai Marre- Had Enough'

Love and Peace :)

I is for Iwan Rheon

IWAN RHEON: Is a 26 year old Welsh singer/actor (most well know in the UK for his part in the TV show misfits). He released his solo EP in 2010 titled 'Tongue Tied' and also one called 'Changing Times'.
He also performs with the band 'The Convictions'.
He has meaningful lyrics paired with great acoustic guitar and vocals for most of the tracks. I do really like his song tongue tied.

My second band have a bit more of an alternative/indie sound. They are called IS TROPICAL: a recent band from London. They choose to perform with veiled faces, and masks, I'm not sure why, but it's an interesting visual hook. They have a more electro, bass, pop sound. Their debut album was released last year titled 'Native To'. My favourite song is called 'The Greeks', but I would also recommend listening to 'South Pacific'.

And finally, a more well known band called ISLANDS: they are a Canadian indie rock band, formed in 2005. They have had a few albums out, the one that contains my favourite song is called 'Return to the Sea' released in 2006. But they also released one this year as well.

The song is one you've probably heard on the radio, called 'Don't call me Whitney, Bobby'
That's all for I've got for 'I'.
Love and Peace

F is for The Fruit Tree Foundation

So, sorry for the delay with this post... Have had a couple of assignment deadlines recently. But F is indeed for The Fruit Tree Foundation! This is actually a foundation, that released a CD of song collaborations with different artists from the folk and indie scenes.
It was started in Scotland, by Musicians Rod Jones and Emma Pollock. The aim being to raise awareness for mental health problems and their preconceptions. The songs also try to explore the stereotypes and childhood mental health issues.

Their album came out last year- which you can listen to on spotify if you have it.... a lot of the songs are on youtube, or you can buy them here.
This song is called 'Just as Scared'- its got a slow feel to it, and they use some minor notes to give it a creepy kind of sound, and not as upbeat. But I enjoy it....

Also for F- is the New Zealand band FIVE MILE TOWN: who have just released their single 'Saturated'
This song reminds me a little of The Kooks, and the singer sounds a bit mumford and sons but I like their stuff so far.

Love and Peace

B is for The Benders

Now I realize that in the UK the term "benders" is slightly rude. However they are actually a band. Hopefully one that not too many of you have heard of. Bear in mind they aren't to be confused with the 1960's garage band that have the same name.

My favourite song of theirs is 'Can't Wait'.
They have a very bluegrass sound, with the banjo, and some great harmonies. Their first album coming out in 2000 with title 'The Benders' and their second in 2001 called 'The Benders ||' and their latest being released in 2003 titled 'Mountain Radio'. You can listen to them in the links. It appears they have been around for longer than I thought. But I love their upbeat tracks, they just put you in a good mood.

The second band I wanted to mention, only have one track out at the moment, but I assume are planning on making a record, there isn't much information on them. They are called Brother/Sister and their song is called Opossum, is so catchy, and just sticks in your head!

And just for fun.... here is the old 1960's band's track called 'Can't Tame Me'. Which is actually not bad either. :D
Love and Peace.

A is for Aunt Martha

My theme is: Music (although I may throw in a film or two) But for the main part I'll be trying to show you artists that I like and that you could like too if you don't already know them...

Aunt Martha is an Indie band, who's style is indie folk, country style. I recently discovered them last year when their album Norway, ME came out. My favourite song of that album is Blue Buildings

Their songs have a kind of thoughtful and interesting sound to them. In the video, one of them seems to be playing a strange wooden box like contraption, which after endless searching I'm sorry to say I have no idea what it is.
If you get the chance to youtube their songs, let me know what you think. And whether I was successful in showing you a new band, or whether you liked them.

Thats it for now folks
Love and Peace

P.s. My sister has put my up to the challenge of singing a song for every letter of the alphabet, which I will be attempting over at my youtube channel! Stay tuned!
